Malcolm Edeson

ARDS Instructor and Race/Trackday Driver Coach

Malcolm EdesonMalcolm started his Racing Career in 1990 when he attended the Jim Russell 7-day Race Driver Training course which concluded with his first ever race in which he came 2nd. After a few more early successes, Malcolm came 3rd in the 1990 prestigious Jim Russell “World Scholarship” award. This was an impressive result as the other competitors where all Jim Russell graduates from all over the World.

ARDS Instruction logo.Jim Russell saw his talent and was asked to train as an instructor with him. This was a great honour as my fellow instructors at that time were the likes of Chris Hodgetts, Kelvin Burt, Anthony Reid, Warren Hughes, Dario Franchitti, and many more top drivers.

The following years saw me progress as an instructor and Driver Coach with Jim Russell whilst also doing odd bits of racing and rallying and winning the vast majority of them, including winning the 1993 Saloon Championship despite only entering 75% of the races, all of which I won.

I’ve found the cg-lock extremely beneficial. It improves both feel & control and lessens fatigueMalcolm Edeson ARDS Instructor

In the late ‘90s Malcolms’ successful IT company didn’t leave much time for formal instructing but he still kept up the Driver Coaching both in the UK and overseas, I worked in Russia, USA, Europe, South Africa & Australia. He returned to formal (ARDS) instructing in 2000 and is now a Grade A ARDS Instructor (the highest instructor grade). Malcolm continues to provide expert and professional Driver Coaching to both Racing and Track day drivers.

Malcolm EdesonMalcolm’s racing has moved more towards endurance racing over the past few years with many races in the Britcar series plus odd sprint races as time allows, rarely off the podium and many wins. In 2007 he will again be mainly competing in endurance races, including the biggest race in the world, the Nurburgring 24hrs and also the Britcar 24hr race at Silverstone.

Much of his work comes from referral and recommendations, hence his somewhat sparse website but interested drivers are welcome to call him on 07734563158 for superb tuition of the highest quality as data-logging and in-car video with full analysis.

Malcolm EdesonMalcolm says of the CG-Lock "I’ve found the cg-lock extremely beneficial. It improves both feel & control and lessens fatigue… useful on the road and invaluable on the track.

One of my regular ‘commutes’ includes about 30 miles each way of country lanes. I really enjoy the drive but always used to have a stiff back at the end of the day from bracing myself through the turns. The CG-Lock has made a big difference.

I usually get paid for giving advice on how to drive quicker on track, well here’s some free advice… if you’re on track and you haven’t got a harness, get a cg-lock!"

Malcolm gets his season off to a spectacular start in the new for 2008 Nippon Challenge on 27th April

Malcolm EdesonMalcolm EdesonMalcolm had done a deal with Keystone Group to rent an MX5 for the first two Powernights events on May 8th and June 19th and late last week Keystone offered Malcolm a drive in one of their rental MX5 race cars for the Nippon Challenge race as they had a driver pull out.

Malcolm says “It was too good a deal to turn down, i’d never driven an MX5 before and my first run in the car would be in qualifying but, with 40 cars on the grid, 27 of them MX5s it was bound to be huge fun. As well as MX5s there were RX7s, MR2s,
Subaru’s & Civics etc.”

“I found quali really tough, 41 cars on a 1.6 mile circuit is a little cosy and never managed a fully clear lap plus I was struggling with the gearshift and the brand new Toyo T1Rs (very vague when new)”

Malcolm qualified 9th of the MX5s 0.8 of a second behind pole man ex-BTCC driver Eugene O’Brien. However, the car was found to be underweight after quali and as the series is new and want to ensure a level playing field, Malcolm was demoted to the rear of the grid, 40th position.

“The car was weighed at scrutineering and was under but the team added extra weight and it should have been OK. I wasn’t too unhappy, I’d have my video running so should get some great footage coming through from the back of the field.”

And so it was with Malcolm passing 23 cars to finish 17th in both races.

“It was the most fun i’ve had in years. Usually you only get to pass a few cars at most and are often having to defend so getting to pass 23 in just a 15 minute race was epic, made for some great video!”

October 2007 - Malcolm Edeson in the CG-Lock sponsored Honda Civic wins the Britcar 24hr (Class 3) – Silverstone, UK

Malcolm was drafted in to drive both Daniels Motorsport/CG-Lock Honda Civics, a total of around 12hrs driving. “I only found out I’d be doing full stints in both cars on the morning of qualifying so it was a bit of a shock, but i’m always up for a challenge” said Malcolm.

Malcolm started the race in car 67 and towards the end of the stint was side-swiped by a Marcos who obviously thought he was in a sprint race. “It caused some panel damage and the handling wasn’t as good from then on but not worth taking the time to repair”.

Malcolm was again in the wars just after midnight as the Duke Video BMW M3 had brake failure into Vale corner and Malcolm, this time in car 68 was hit with huge force from behind. The front of the BMW and the rear quarter of the Civic were destroyed. Amazingly after 5hrs the Daniels Motorsport car was repaired and finished the race. Released from the Medical Centre Malcolm was again out in Car 67. This time punctuated by 45 minutes behind the safety car in dense fog followed by a 2hr “Parce Ferme” situation owing to the fog.

A later session back in car 68 brought Malcolm’s driving to end “I was pretty tired”. With 30 minutes to go, Ben Jacques in the 67 car was leading but lost 3rd and 4th gears, having to drive the last half hour in 5th gear.

At 16:30, car 67 crossed the line to win class 3 of the 2007 Britcar 24hr race. “It was an amazing experience and everyone in the team worked so hard, we had to fight for every tenth”. “After the Powernights victory last week and now this it feels great and I am fast acquiring a taste for champagne”

September 2007 - Malcolm Edeson, Donington, POWERNIGHTS race 2007 in the CG-Lock/RogueSports sponsored MR2 spins and regains control…somehow!..

Malcolm explains…

"The race is a mixed Sports and Saloon race, I’m in an MR2 Challenge Car (MK2) on road tyres and soft springs, chasing and catching a similar car as we approach the Craner Curves. A move to the outside is precluded by 2 super quick, slick shod Radicals so switch to the inside. Looks like I’m going to get squeezed at the apex so back out but unable to slow without lifting, then this equation takes over: Craners + Lift = Beach Holiday.”

I am trying to get the car backward for the gravel as was afraid that a side one hit might lead to a roll, just about managed it mid gravel trap then some manic steering work to get it back on track facing the right way and not get collected!! I posted some more vids on YouTube, this one in particular is worth watching for a bit of an arse-cleanching moment. Coming down through the Craners I notice mid-corner that the slick shod Cupra has slowed right down and virtually parked himself on the racing line.

I’m 110% committed through there and only just manage to ease the car over to the left."

Malcolm had the last laugh…he won the event a week later at Silverstone.”
