One Smart Invention

Bruce Mather PhotoThe CG-Lock was invented by Bruce Mather. He is not your typical inventor as he has a good blend of inventiveness along with a great track record of business management. Bruce is an American fast-car nut. He had always had an interest in fast cars and Bruce’s passion was taking his daily driver on the track and seeing how fast he could do laps (or autocross… the big thing in the USA). No special tyres or suspension. No roll bar or harnesses. Just his every day car.

During hard driving, Bruce noticed that he and other drivers were always trying to secure the seatbelt to get more stability to assist their performance driving. He saw some folks twist the seatbelt before locking it into the buckle… he saw folks try to clip the seatbelt to stop it from loosening.

Read the history of the CG-LockThere must be a way of easily tightening the lap belt portion of the seatbelt, Bruce thought. Down in his basement he worked up the first prototype… and the second… and the third… until the basic concept sold today was born…. 45 versions on from the first attempt!

One key learning was that simply tightening just the lap belt provided huge improvements…a harness wasn’t needed for a “street” car!

How It All Started

We met Bruce for lunch one day back in 2003 and he showed us this big lump of metal he’d made in his basement using a few very basic tools. He explained what it did and we immediately were interested to try it out. He fitted one of his precious prototypes to a second hand Porsche and we “got it” straight away. We couldn’t believe this had not already been invented (don’t you always think this when you see a new invention?!!).

After he’d made the ‘final’ prototype, Bruce really “crash tested” his device to insure it did not interfere with the safety of the seatbelt. It didn’t. Bruce then gained enough private investment from friends and colleagues (including me) to take the concept to designers; have the device professionally engineered for manufacture, robustness, durability, and ease of use. Then the new version was professionally crash tested again.

We spent countless hours discussing the branding, marketing, patenting and production of the eventual “CG-Lock” (CG is for Centre of Gravity). We had a huge mountain to climb but we knew we had something really special.

A few years on (of hard slog… whoever said success was 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration was dead right!) we have now got the initial investment funding needed for the next few phases of the CG-Lock and appointed a new CEO – Mr. Charles M. Carter (an expert with a long history of business successes in many roles including CEO, CFO, and Chairman) to move the business forward in 2007.

It is pretty much a full time weekend job… planning the week ahead, following up enquiries and getting out to shows and exhibitions to meet you.

Our Audience

Meet us at top motoring and mobility eventsSince the early days testing out the CG-Lock prototypes, we have got feedback from users that have opened our eyes to markets previously not thought of. The Mobility Impaired (paraplegia, amputations, polio, cerebral palsy), (thanks to Andy Ellis, a professional mobility assessor at the QE Foundation Mobility Centre, who saw the device during one of his track days and made the (now obvious) connection…thanks Andy!!) posture/medical (chronic and acute lower back ache), emergency vehicle drivers (police, ambulance security), the military, and light aircraft are all some of the applications for this ingenious patented product. The CG-Lock is even being tested out in Iraq with the troops in the 4×4 vehicles. The military application alone is huge. Our exclusive back specialist retailers (BackinAction) are so impressed with the results they now sell the device purely for posture benefits.

Our vision? To have the CG-Lock concept as an OE (original equipment) part for all new cars produced from 2012. We hope to prove that the seatbelt is safer when the CG-Lock is added (we’ve already got a hint of that!). We can only accomplish this goal by producing the current CG-Lock at a good price and ensuring we look after our customers and through this more people get to know about how this little product really does transform your passive seatbelt into an added performance/stability/comfort advantage.
